How to Choose the Right Pet Bird for You

pet birdDogs and cats may be the most popular pets, but birds are awesome too. There are all kinds of different bird breeds that you can choose from. Some are high maintenance, some aren’t. Smaller breeds tend to be easier to take care of and larger breeds tend to require more work. When you’re trying to decide which pet bird is the right bird for you, here are some things you should consider.

4 Things to Consider When Choosing a Pet Bird

Behavior and General Temperament

When choosing the right pet bird for you, you need to think about how much you want it to socialize. Do you want it to come out of its cage and socialize with you or are you ok with your bird being more reserved? Breeds like Parakeets and Cockatiels tend to be very social and loveable creatures. But bigger bird breeds are not as easily cuddled and can be a little more standoffish. If you’re looking for a cuddly companion, try one of these bird breeds.

Size

As a general rule, the bigger the bird, the bigger the commitments involved with caring for the bird. As a novice bird owner, you need to be realistic about how much bird you can take on. If you’ve never owned a bird before, just keep in mind that the bigger the bird, the more you’re going to have to take care of it. Bigger birds like Macaws tend to be louder, messier and much more demanding than smaller bird species like Parakeets and Lovebirds.

Maintenance and Nutrition

Certain bird breeds require different diets. Lories, which are known for their bright colors, have highly specialized digestive systems. They require a diet full of fruit, pollen and nectar which causes them to produce liquid droppings. Because of this, the cage needs to be cleaned much more frequently than other bird breeds. Before you bring home a pet bird, research their diet and how often you’re going to need to clean their cage.

Financial Commitment

Birds can come with expensive price tags. Large birds can cost thousands of dollars in addition to needing a large cage, lots of food and housetraining. Birds like Macaws can live for more than 100 years, so think about all of the veterinary care that would be required for a bird like a Macaw to live a healthy life. If you’re thinking about getting a pet bird, you need to think about the big picture and how much financial responsibility comes with it. We’re not saying it’s not worth it! We’re just saying you need to consider this very important part of owning a pet bird.
